Air Canada

Air Canada is Canada’s largest airline and the largest provider of scheduled passenger services in the Canadian market. Air Canada provides scheduled service directly to more than 180 airports in Canada, the United States and Internationally on six continents. From Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ), Air Canada offers eight Air Canada Express flights per day to Montreal and 4 per day to Ottawa.

Air Canada operates an Air Canada Café at Billy Bishop Airport for Business Class and other eligible customers.

Air Canada’s Aeroplan program is Canada’s premier travel loyalty program, where members can earn or redeem points on the world’s largest airline partner network of 45 airlines, plus through an extensive range of merchandise, hotel and car rental partners. Through Air Canada Vacations, it offers more travel choices than any other Canadian tour operator to hundreds of destinations worldwide, with a wide selection of hotels, flights, cruises, day tours, and car rentals.

Air Canada’s predecessor, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA) inaugurated its first flight on September 1, 1937. The 55-minute flight aboard a Lockheed 10A carried passengers and mail between Vancouver and Seattle. By 1965, TCA changed its name to Air Canada, which became fully privatized in 1988. Its corporate headquarters are located in Montreal.

Through PortsToronto’s agreement with Bullfrog Power, renewable energy generators inject electricity back into the grid on its behalf, matching the amount of electricity used by PortsToronto’s operations including the Marilyn Bell ferry. Since 2010, PortsToronto has displaced more than 31,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and counting.

Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA)

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is a federal Crown corporation with a mandate to protect the public by effectively and efficiently screening air travellers and their baggage at designated airports in Canada, such as Billy Bishop Airport. CATSA is responsible for a number of services related to security, including passenger and baggage screening and the screening of workers and other non-passengers entering restricted areas of the airport.

Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA)

The Canada Border Services Agency’s motto is, Protection, Service and Integrity. These are the guiding principals on which the Agency’s responsibilities, mandate and workforce are based. At Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA) the CBSA is responsible for the international flow of persons and goods arriving in Canada by air or watercraft. CBSA at BBTCA processes trans-border flights for Porter Airlines arriving from several U.S. destinations.

In addition to Terminal Passenger Operations, the CBSA at BBTCA processes General Aviation aircraft, including seaplanes and small watercraft. During the summer months, the CBSA also performs Marina checks that cover the entire GTA waterfront, a 98 kilometre area that includes 43 sites between Bowmanville and Port Credit, Ontario. Born of the rich history that is our legacy, the CBSA is proud to protect and serve Canadians and remains confident in our ability to meet new challenges.

Fire Hall

Ensuring the safety and security of those at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is always a top priority for PortsToronto, owner and operator of the airport. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has a fully functioning, on-island fire hall and emergency response centre, staffed by more than double the number of emergency personnel required by Transport Canada. The fire hall utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and vehicles which have been upgraded and expanded over the past few years, including new firefighting trucks, a mid-size pumper and a Fire Command vehicle.

Heli Tours

Toronto Heli Tours – established in 1997, is Toronto’s only dedicated helicopter tour operator. We feature breathtaking scenic tours over the downtown center. Indie88

Indie88 (CIND-FM) is Toronto’s New Alternative. Launched on August 3rd, 2013, as Canada’s first indie music station, Indie88 provides a platform for emerging artists while paying homage to the classics that inspired them. Indie88 is where new music belongs. It’s also a multi-media hub for news, local lifestyle, and pop-culture content focused on unique and engaging stories.

Iron Guppy Tugboat

In July 2016, the Iron Guppy officially came into service, replacing the William Rest, which was built in 1961 for the Toronto Harbour Commissioners (now PortsToronto). The new tugboat, which was built in Wheatley, Ontario, works in the Port and Harbour of Toronto to provide a variety of marine services, including environmental spill response, dredging, ice-breaking and navigation-marker maintenance. When necessary, the tugboat also provides emergency assistance to the Toronto Police Service and Toronto Fire Services marine units.  Mechanical systems for the vessel were selected to increase overall efficiency.

Marilyn Bell Electric Ferry

As Canada’s first zero-emission, 100 per cent electric ferry, the Marilyn Bell e-ferry has eliminated the primary singular emissions contributor within Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport’s operation, and significantly improved the air and noise quality in the surrounding community.

Powered entirely by electricity from clean wind and solar sources provided by Bullfrog Power, the retrofitted Marilyn Bell will eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the ferry operation and reduce Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport’s Scope 1 emissions by approximately 530 tonnes per year.

The airport’s ferry operation makes more than 75 crossings per day, 365 days a year, and can hold 15 vehicles and 200 passengers. It transports not only passengers (who love the unbeatable city views), airport staff and essential supplies to and from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, but serves as a vital link for City of Toronto service vehicles to gain access to the Toronto Islands as well as for critical Air Ornge emergency medevac services.

Music on the Fly

‘Music on the Fly’ is a program supported by the City of Toronto and ArtHaus. The program was created to provide local music talents with an opportunity to perform in front of YTZ passengers, staff and the community.

NAV Canada

NAV CANADA plays a unique and critical role managing the 18 million square kilometres of Canadian civil airspace and the North Atlantic oceanic airspace under Canada’s control.​​

We oversee air traffic through a sophisticated network of area control centres, air traffic control towers, flight service stations, maintenance centres, flight information centres and navigation aids across the country. Our customers include airlines, business aviation and air cargo operators, air charters and air taxis, helicopter operators and general aviation pilots and owners.

Canada was the first country in the world to privatize its civil air navigation system, and we remain one of the few fully private companies in the world wholly responsible for air traffic control, flight information and other aeronautical services.

As a not-for-profit corporation, we invest directly in our operations, people and infrastructure to keep Canada’s air navigation system as safe, efficient and innovative as it can be.

Nieuport Aviation

Nieuport Aviation is the owner and operator of the passenger terminal at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Backed by Canadian and international pension funds and supported by significant international expertise in managing aviation operations, we are committed to world-class customer service for the millions of customers using the airport. In addition to managing the passenger terminal, Nieuport Aviation offers passengers a free bus shuttle service between the airport and downtown Toronto, helping to provide a seamless travel experience. Since acquiring the airport terminal, Nieuport has invested $60 million in upgrades, recently opening the Aspire Business Lounge for Canadian travellers. Ornge

Ornge, a not-for-profit organization, co-ordinates all aspects of Ontario’s air ambulance system, the critical care land transport program, organ retrieval and the authorization of air and land ambulance transfers between hospitals. Ornge performs more than 21,000 patient related transports each year. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is used as a vital hub for Ornge, where approximately 4,000 medevac flights occur each year.

Pedestrian Tunnel

On July 30, 2015, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport reached a major milestone in customer service with the opening of its, award-winning 853-foot pedestrian tunnel connecting Toronto’s mainland to the airport. The tunnel provides the passengers who travel through Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport with a faster and more convenient way to access to the airport, in less than a six-minute walk.

Porter Airlines

Since 2006, Porter Airlines has been elevating the experience of economy air travel for every passenger, providing genuine hospitality with style, care and charm. Visitors to the Porter hangar at Doors Open will have the opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes at a working airport maintenance hangar, and get an up close and personal look at a De Havilland Dash 8-Q400 aircraft. There will also be the opportunity to talk with Porter team members to gain an insight into the aviation industry. There’ll be pilots, flight attendants, aircraft maintenance engineers, and more!

The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program is a volunteer-based program and is offered at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport as a partnership with Nieuport Aviation. Therapy dogs provide comfort and companionship to passengers on a weekly basis at YTZ.

Trash Trapping Program

The PortsToronto Trash Trapping Program employs trash trapping technology and solutions-based research to tackle plastic pollution and protect Toronto’s waters for future generations. Since 2019, the program has removed hundreds of thousands of small pieces of plastic pollution from the Toronto Harbour, moving the needle toward cleaner water in Lake Ontario. 

The program is led by PortsToronto and the U of T Trash Team, in partnership with the Waterfront Business Improvement Area (WBIA) and the City of Toronto BIA Office Innovation Grant, Nieuport Aviation, the Toronto Zoo, Harbourfront Centre and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).

It is part of the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy, a partnership led by TRCA, and of the International Trash Trapping Network, an initiative led by the U of T Trash Team and Ocean Conservancy, and has influenced the launch of similar trash trapping and data collection programs throughout the Great Lakes and beyond.
