PortsToronto to Begin Necessary Runway Pavement Grooving Work at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport April 26
Toronto (April 21, 2022) – Beginning April 26 for a period of three nights, PortsToronto will be completing work to groove the runway pavement at the intersection of Runway 08-26 and Taxiway Echo at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
This important work has been discussed at the Community Liaison Committee as one of PortsToronto’s initiatives being undertaken in 2022, and will result in the reduction of water ponding on the runway during rain events, which in turn improves aircraft braking performance.
The remainder of the runway has been previously grooved and this section is the last to be done. The work was deferred until now since the US-based contractor could not travel to Canada to complete the work due to pandemic-related travel restrictions.
Work will take place each night between 11:00 p.m. and 6:45 a.m. as the runway must be closed to complete the grooving. The work is anticipated to generate noise within the acceptable limits (sound measurements will be taken as was done previously while the remainder of the runway was grooved). Any required lighting will be pointed to the south, away from residential areas.
